What students actually need for a new term — and what can wait. A prioritised list from laptop to backup.
A new term is a common time to buy tech. Spend on the things you'll use every day and skip the rest until you know you need them.
The essentials
- A reliable laptop matched to your course (see our laptop guide). This is where most of the budget should go.
- A backup plan — cloud storage with automatic sync, plus an occasional copy to an external drive. Losing an assignment the night before a deadline is avoidable.
- Comfortable earphones or headphones for lectures, study and calls. A good microphone helps with group calls.
- A power bank that can charge your phone at least once; a USB-C PD model can top up many laptops too.
Nice to have
- A tablet with a stylus if you annotate slides or take handwritten notes
- A laptop stand, keyboard and mouse for long study sessions at a desk
- A portable SSD if you work with large files like video or design projects
Software
Before buying software, check what your institution provides: many universities offer free office suites, cloud storage and specialist programs to students. Student discounts on software and hardware are common, too.
Protect your gear
- Use a padded laptop sleeve or bag
- Turn on device tracking (Find My Device / Find My)
- Use a password manager and enable two-factor authentication on email
- Consider insurance or an extended warranty for an expensive laptop
