How to make an old laptop feel fast again
Before replacing a slow laptop, try these fixes — from cleaning up startup apps to the single upgrade that helps most.
A laptop that took forever to start may not need replacing. Many slow machines are held back by software clutter or one weak component.
1. Trim startup programs
Many apps launch automatically and keep running in the background. In Windows, open Task Manager → Startup; on a Mac, check Login Items in System Settings. Disable anything you don't need right away.
2. Uninstall what you don't use
Old utilities, trial software and duplicate security tools slow a system down. Remove them, and keep just one antivirus product.
3. Free up storage
A nearly full drive slows everything. Aim to keep at least 15–20% free: clear downloads, move photos and videos to an external drive or cloud storage, and empty the recycle bin.
4. Update — or reinstall
Install operating system and driver updates. If the system is years old and cluttered, backing up and doing a clean reinstall can make a dramatic difference.
5. Replace the hard drive with an SSD
This is the single biggest upgrade for older laptops that still use a spinning hard drive. Boot times drop from minutes to seconds. Many older models accept a standard SSD; a repair shop can clone your data across.
6. Add RAM if possible
If the laptop has 4 GB or less and a free or replaceable memory slot, upgrading to 8 GB helps with multiple apps and browser tabs.
7. Clean and cool
Dust in the fans makes a laptop overheat and slow itself down. Have the vents cleaned, and use it on a hard surface rather than a bed or pillow.
When to let go
If the processor is very old, the laptop no longer gets security updates, or repairs cost close to a new machine, replacing it is the better choice.
